In 1947 Veryl and Claire Poirier opened a gas station/auto repair shop on the corner of Hampden and Walnut Streets in Holyoke, MA. Veryl was not an experienced mechanic at the time. He left his job at Livingston Mills as a machine operator working for $1.00 per hour to try something new. Some thought that he would not succeed. After fourteen years at that location Veryl was offered a new gas station two blocks away at 630 Dwight St. Veryl's both children Suzanne and Denis were working in the family business. Many other relatives worked at Veryls throughout the years.
Veryl and Claire retired in 1986. Denis and MaryAnn Poirier took over the business at this time. Jeffrey Poirier started working part time in the summer of 1987 and has worked in the business ever since.
In March of 2000 Veryls moved to its current location at 644 Newton St. in South Hadley, Ma. The shop now has four full time technicians, one full time inspection person and five office staff.
